Clifford’s debut short story collection Choice Cuts mines the fractured territory of the marginalized, misanthropic, and short-changed. From morally bereft television producers desperate for a hit, to veterans suffering psychotic splits, Clifford delves into the madness and desperation that plague those living on the edge, while never surrendering the search for the light that guides us all. In these fast-paced, hard-hitting tales of ne’er-do-wells, addicts, and gangsters, two predominant themes emerge throughout the collection human life frequently reduced to little more than pieces of meat, and the bad choices we often make to escape that fate, however good our intentions. Echoing the pulp past of Thompson and Keene, with the sardonic worldview of Caulfield and Durden, Clifford’s style is lean, mean, and unforgiving.

This is a fun collection of stories. And it's exactly that: a collection. There's no central theme or interwoven narrative or characters tying them together. So, you can read them all at once, read them out of order, or read them in between other things. I read them all at once and in order because I can't really do otherwise, but it was nice having this grab-bag of stories that traverse a wide range of genres, styles, voices, characters, and settings. You'll get dark noir, action, and other stories that veer off into a kind of Twilight Zone vibe. Stories take place everywhere--from rural small towns to LA, Oakland, and Siberia. These are stories of revenge and capers, bad decisions, madness, and violence. A true collection of pulp fiction. Favorites for me were "Tripping Biscuits," "Red Pistachios," and "Nix Verrida."Product details

Choice Cuts Joe Clifford 9781480000926 Books Reviews
Joe Clifford's short stories have left me reeling. Well-written, with more of life's realities than many authors dare to explore, his characters are not indicative of the rosy hope that we all hold out for humanity. They are troubled, twisted, frighteningly sick, and immensely fascinating. Through them, Clifford delves into the dark corners of the human phyche, exposing fears, perversions, and the dreadful consequences of life gone wrong, while always maintaining a clear and firm connection to what it is to be human. There is love. There is the desire to be connected. There are real stories that take gut-wrenching turns. Each story has a very distinct voice and perspective, and a refreshingly frank approach.
Among my favorites was "Red Pistachios", a story about a washed-up mystery novelist, turned writing workshop teacher at a local college. The character is belligerent, drunk and nasty, yet not altogether unlikable, somehow. The plot is incredibly well-crafted, and brilliantly executed...and the conclusion is shocking, thrilling, tragically funny, and utterly terrifying.
Having read the collection was like having been kicked in the chest with a size 14 hiking boot, and wanting more.
In this collection, Clifford has shown himself to be an intense writer, a master of irony, and one hell of a funny guy. I certainly look forward to reading more of his work. As soon as I get over the nightmares about botflies and cockroaches.
Joe Clifford's Choice Cuts is an excellent, fun, balls to the wall read and I was able to devour the collection in just a few sittings. Each story quickly hooks you (a great skill on Clifford's part) and keeps you guessing until the final reveal...and beyond.
While the collection is at its heart a menagerie of hardboiled heroes and heels, Clifford effortlessly weaves in elements of the literary, the macabre, horror, and sci-fi resulting in a collection that defies genre expectations like a sucker punch to the gut. Whether he's paying tribute to the old timers in "Tripping for Biscuits" or delving into the psychological in the Bradburian "Nix Verrida", Clifford's Choice Cuts has something for everyone and as a whole is more than just a satisfying read, it's an inspiration.

Just like every other moody young actor with an attitude problem gets compared to James Dean, every other new hard-boiled writer with a terse tone gets compared to Jim Thompson. But Joe Clifford is the real deal. His crisp, clean, bare-knuckled, big-hearted but no-nonsense style effortlessly evokes Thompson as well as David Goodis, Charles Willeford and other rugged pioneers of this now well-traversed pulp terrain, but with a hoarse, harsh, humbly humanistic and viciously visceral voice obviously honed by raw, real life experience, as opposed to merely echoing the past by paying hokey homage to his spiritual predecessors. His work in "Choice Cuts" is both well-crafted and rough around the edges, making them that much more accessible, relatable and realistic, no matter how outrageous the context. A good example, out of many to choose from, is the story "Go," breathlessly related with relentless ruthlessness and unpretentious precision, a marvel of economical momentum - a description which characterizes most of the bite-sized blitzes in this anarchistic anthology of anti-social angst, told like a torrid "Twilight Zone." This generous collection of sixteen stories is akin to a wicked Whitman's sampler of wry wit, or a literary jukebox popping with passionate prose-poetry and fast-moving, hard-hitting narrative numbers pulsating with melodic menace. This is hardcore punk rock pulp for purists and practitioners, not pandering pap for poseurs and pansies. I greatly look forward to Clifford's forthcoming works, like "Junkie Love." He is not only a wild writer to watch; he's an authentic author to admire.
